Six of the twelve are capped by their own complaint records. That is half the field, and a higher proportion than the catalogue as a whole.

The Trap: Less Frequent, More Committed

Here is the finding that makes this guide worth reading, and it is the opposite of what most people assume.

Shipping less often does not mean committing less. Several of these carry the strictest terms we have found anywhere:

• CultureFly quarterly plans can be cancelled between shipments. Its annual plans cannot be cancelled until the final box of the year has shipped.
• Birchbox Signature has no self-service skip. Its 3, 6, and 12-month prepaid plans cannot be cancelled mid-term.
• Caterpillar Club Box sells a 12-month plan whose terms forbid skipping and pausing entirely, committing you to all six boxes.

The mechanics behind this are straightforward. A monthly box gives you twelve decision points a year. A quarterly box gives you four, and a prepaid annual plan gives you one. The less often something ships, the more of your money each individual commitment represents, and the longer you are locked in when it goes wrong.

The practical rule: on a quarterly box, the gap between “I want to stop” and “I stopped paying” can be three months even when everything works as advertised. Treat a quarterly prepaid plan as a bigger decision than a monthly one, not a smaller one.

Spirits: Maestros del Agave, $138. The highest-rated box in this group at 4.4, with a Trustpilot score of 4.0 across nearly 7,700 reviews, which is by far the most robust evidence base here. It is also the most expensive, and it is tequila and mezcal specifically rather than a general spirits club.

Crafts: Caterpillar Club Box, £25. Rated 4.1 on a Trustpilot score of 5.0 across more than 1,000 reviews. Note it prices in pounds and that its 12-month plan is the one described above. Take the flexible plan.

Lifestyle: Alltrue, $69.95. Rated 4.1 for sustainable, small-brand curation. Its customization is annual-members-only, and the company collapsed in 2022 before being bought and relaunched, which is on its page in full.

Grooming: Manscaped Peak Hygiene, $18.99. The cheapest entry here by a wide margin, and it carries a 4.5 Trustpilot across nearly 6,000 reviews. It is a refill plan attached to a device purchase rather than a standalone box, so read what recurs before subscribing.

Beauty: none we would push. FabFitFun, IPSY Ultimate, and Birchbox Signature are all capped at 3.5. Margot Elena rates 4.0, with the caveat in the next section.

One Rating Worth Reading Carefully

Margot Elena rates 4.0, and that number rests almost entirely on a BBB grade. Its Trustpilot profile carries eight reviews, below the ten we require before using a score at all, so the 4.0 comes from an A+ BBB record rather than from customer sentiment we can measure.

That is not a mark against it. It means the usual second source is missing, and a 4.0 backed one way is a weaker claim than a 4.0 backed two ways. We would rather say that than let the number imply evidence that does not exist.

What These Actually Cost a Year

Per-shipment prices hide the annual commitment, which is the number that matters on an infrequent box.

Bi-monthly boxes ship six times a year, not four, which is easy to miss. Lovevery at $80 and Wizarding World at $39.99 both cost considerably more annually than their per-shipment price suggests.

How to Choose One

1. Work out the annual figure first, using the table above. On an infrequent box it is the only number that reflects what you are agreeing to.
2. Find the cancellation terms before you find the discount. The prepaid saving on these is real, and so is the lock-in. Check specifically whether a prepaid plan can be cancelled mid-term.
3. Check whether skipping exists at all. On a quarterly box a single skip moves your next delivery by three months, which is a much bigger lever than on a monthly one.
4. Read the complaint count, not the letter grade. Half this field is capped, and in every case it is the service record rather than the contents that caused it.
5. Start on the shortest term available. The discount for committing is rarely worth the exposure on a box you have not received yet.

The Honest Summary

Quarterly boxes genuinely solve the problem they set out to solve. Fewer deliveries means less accumulation and, usually, a better-made box for the same annual spend.

What they do not do is reduce your commitment, and several of the services here actively increase it. If the reason you want a quarterly box is that monthly felt like too much, take that instinct seriously and pick the plan with the shortest term, not the one with the biggest discount.
