Best Beauty Subscription Boxes: Every Famous Name Is Capped

Eleven of Fourteen Are Capped

Beauty is the largest category we rate and one of the worst performing. Eleven of its fourteen boxes carry a rating cap, meaning a BBB grade of D or F, or a Trustpilot score below 3.0, holds them at or below 3.5 regardless of what is in the box.

More striking than the count is who it covers. Every name you have heard of is capped: IPSY in all three of its tiers, Birchbox in both, GlossyBox, FabFitFun’s Beauty Edit, Allure Beauty Box, and Scentbird.

The three that are not capped are a quarterly discovery box, a fragrance service, and a skincare subscription run by a dermatology retailer. Only one of those has a large enough review base to be confident about.

The Best-Evidenced Box Here Is the Least Famous

Dermstore BeautyFIX, $24.95/month, rated 3.8. Its Trustpilot score is 4.0 across more than 53,000 reviews, which is by a wide margin the largest evidence base in this category and one of the largest on the whole site.

It is not capped, it has no BBB profile, and it is run by a dermatology-focused retailer rather than a subscription-box company. The product is professional skincare rather than a mixed beauty bag, so it is a narrower proposition than IPSY or Birchbox.

If your criterion is “which of these can I be most confident about”, the answer is this one, and it is not close. A 4.0 across 53,000 reviews tells you far more than a 4.0 across fifty.

Two Good Ratings on Very Little Evidence

Two of the three uncapped boxes are scored on almost nothing, and that should temper how you read them.

Margot Elena Discovery Box rates 4.0 on eight Trustpilot reviews. That score comes from its BBB A+ rather than from customers, because eight is below the ten-review threshold at which we use a Trustpilot figure at all.

Petit Vour rates 3.9 and is formally Provisional. It has two Trustpilot reviews and no BBB profile, so its customer experience is not scored at all and the 3.9 is a ceiling rather than a measurement. At $18 a month for vegan clean beauty it is one of the cheaper options, and we simply cannot tell you how the company behaves.

ScentBox at $16.95 is the exception among the three. Its 4.0 rests on 376 reviews and a BBB B-, which is thin but real, and it is the only uncapped box here with both sources present.

Why the Famous Names Score Badly

The pattern across the capped boxes is consistent and worth naming.

IPSY holds a BBB A+ across all its tiers, meaning complaints get answered, alongside a Trustpilot score of 2.2 from about 6,200 reviews. Responsive company, dissatisfied customers.

Birchbox is the reverse and worse: a BBB F with all 20 complaints unanswered, on a profile opened in 2024 after the company collapsed in 2022 and was bought out of that failure. Its 3.9 Trustpilot looks fine until you read what the recent reviews describe.

Scentbird has the largest review base of any capped box here, 28,000 reviews at 3.8, and a BBB D with 417 complaints. The product is fine. The complaint handling is what holds it at 3.5.

GlossyBox and FabFitFun’s Beauty Edit are capped by customer sentiment rather than by grades, at 2.6 and 2.9.

The common thread is not product quality. Across this category the recurring complaints are billing after cancellation, difficulty reaching support, and subscriptions that proved hard to stop. That is what our caps are measuring.

What to Buy

For skincare, with the most evidence behind it: Dermstore BeautyFIX at $24.95. Narrower than a general beauty box and far better documented.

For fragrance: ScentBox at $16.95, rated 4.0 and uncapped. Its larger rival Scentbird has 75 times the review base but a BBB D and 417 complaints, which is covered in our Scentbird versus ScentBox comparison.

For the cheapest way in: IPSY Original at $15 plus shipping. It is capped, and we still recommend it over Birchbox in our Ipsy versus Birchbox comparison, because at least its complaints get answered.

For full-size products: IPSY Extra at $32 gives five full-size items, which is better value per item than any sample box here. Same company, same caveats.

We would avoid Birchbox in either form. An F grade with a 100% non-response rate, at a company that stopped shipping to paying customers in 2022, is the weakest record in the category.

Before You Subscribe to Any of Them

1. Assume you will need to cancel. In this category that is not pessimism, it is the modal complaint.
2. Never prepay. Several of these offer prepaid terms that cannot be cancelled mid-stream.
3. Use a card you can dispute, and diarise the renewal date.
4. Read the review count, not just the score. Dermstore has 53,000 reviews and Margot Elena has eight. Those two 4.0-ish ratings are not comparable claims.
5. Decide sample or full-size first. A sample box at $15 and a full-size box at $32 are different products, and the accumulation problem is much worse with the latter.

The Honest Summary

If you want a beauty subscription, this is the category where our methodology diverges most from the marketing. The recognisable brands are recognisable because they spend heavily on acquisition, and every one of them is held down by its own record.

The two boxes we would actually point you at are a dermatology retailer’s skincare subscription and a mid-sized fragrance service. Neither is famous, and both are better documented than anything at the top of a sponsored search result.
