People who buy the wrong one of those cancel within two months. The brand matters far less than getting this right.

The Pattern Worth Understanding

Three of these eight have good customer scores and failing BBB grades: Sun Basket at 4.3 with an F, CookUnity at 4.1 with an F, and Blue Apron at 2.4 with a D-.

The first two are the interesting cases. A 4.3 across 3,700 reviews is a genuinely well-liked service. An F means the company is not answering the complaints that escalate. Both are true at once, and they measure different things: satisfaction among people who kept subscribing, versus what happens to people trying to resolve a problem.

Our rules cap a box at 3.5 for a D or F grade regardless of product quality, which is why Sun Basket and CookUnity sit level with services their own customers rate far lower.

Blue Apron is the only one capped twice, by both its 2.4 Trustpilot and its D- grade. It is also the cheapest kit at $7.99 a serving, and it stopped being a subscription in 2025, moving to order-by-order with an optional autoship. Cheap and flexible, with the weakest record in the category.

The Two We Would Actually Recommend

Gobble, $11.99 a serving, rated 4.1. The best customer sentiment of any meal kit here, at 4.5 across about 2,900 reviews, and its pitch is the shortest cook time in the category. It moved to per-serving pricing in June 2026 with a four-serving minimum, and it adds $9.99 shipping per box, which matters on small orders.

Its one gap: no BBB profile, so there is no second source to check that 4.5 against. We rate it 4.1 on the strength of a solid Trustpilot base alone.

Factor, $12.99 a meal at 14 or more, rated 4.1. The best prepared-meal option, with an A+ BBB and 98,000 Trustpilot reviews. Its 3.5 score is mediocre, but on a sample that size it is a reliable read rather than a small-sample wobble, and its complaints get answered. Note the per-meal rate stops improving at 14 meals, so an 18-meal plan saves nothing per meal.

HelloFresh, $10.99 a serving, rated 4.0, is the safe generalist. Its 3.4 Trustpilot is only fair, but across 97,000 reviews, and its A+ BBB carries 1,670 complaints, which is a lot in absolute terms because it is a very large company. It answers them. If you want the most predictable weeknight kit and the widest menu, this is it.

Shipping Changes the Ranking

Per-serving prices are quoted before shipping, and the fees are flat, so they punish small orders disproportionately.

On a three-meal box for two, a $10 shipping fee adds roughly $1.65 to every serving. That is enough to reorder the table. Blue Apron at $7.99 a serving is genuinely the cheapest, and Gobble at $11.99 plus shipping is the most expensive kit here once you account for it.

Compare the delivered total for the plan size you would actually buy. Not the per-serving rate, and never the discounted first box, which in this category is routinely half price and tells you nothing about month two.

Matching the Service to the Situation

You want to cook and you are new to it: HelloFresh. Simple recipe cards, the widest menu, and the best complaint handling in the category.

You want to cook but have twenty minutes: Gobble. It is built around short cook times and its customers are the happiest here.

You do not want to cook at all: Factor. Best record of the prepared services by a distance.

You want chef-driven variety and accept the risk: CookUnity. More interesting food than Factor, cheaper per meal, and an F grade with 210 complaints.

You want the lowest price and no commitment: Blue Apron, at $7.99 a serving with no subscription required since 2025. Go in knowing it holds the worst combined record in this guide.

You want plant-based, ready to eat: Daily Harvest, from $7.99 an item, capped at 3.5 by a BBB F.

What to Check Before Subscribing

1. Decide cook or reheat. Everything else follows.
2. Add shipping to the per-serving price, for the box size you would really order.
3. Work out what week five costs. Every service here discounts the first box heavily.
4. Check the skip deadline. Meal kits ship perishable food on a fixed cutoff, usually several days before delivery. Missing it means a box you did not want arrives anyway, and this is the single most common complaint across the whole category.
5. Read the BBB grade next to the Trustpilot score. In this category especially, they frequently disagree, and the disagreement is informative rather than confusing.

The Honest Summary

Gobble and Factor are the two we would recommend without significant caveats, at 4.1 each, one for cooking and one for not.

HelloFresh at 4.0 is the dependable default if you want the biggest menu and the least risk.

The rest are capped, and in three cases by complaint records that sit oddly next to genuinely positive customer sentiment. That is not a reason to rule them out, but it is a reason to pay monthly, keep your own records, and know that if something goes wrong, the documented pattern is that these particular companies do not answer.
