A BBB letter grade measures responsiveness, not satisfaction. A company earns an A+ by answering complaints, whatever the outcome. Several boxes we cover hold an A+ alongside hundreds of complaints and customer review averages near 1 out of 5. An F is more informative, because it usually means complaints go unanswered, and that is the situation where you have no route to a refund.

A Trustpilot average needs a sample size next to it. A 4.7 from 50 reviews tells you much less than a 3.9 from 90,000. We treat fewer than 10 reviews as no data at all, and we flag anything under 100 as a limited sample. Be suspicious of any guide that quotes a score without the count.

Watch for the absence of data. A box with no Trustpilot profile and no BBB file is not automatically safe. It is unmeasured. We cap those at 3.9, mark them provisional, and list them below every box we can verify, because an unverified box should never outrank a verified one.
