Frostbeard Studio is widely credited with creating the genre of book-themed candles. What began as a pottery studio has grown into a beloved brand among bibliophiles, offering over 120 unique literary-inspired fragrances hand-poured in their Minneapolis studio.
Frostbeard Studio was founded in 2012 by married couple Roxie and Tom Lubanovic in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Roxie, a ceramist, and Tom, a commercial animator, had been selling pottery and soy candles at local craft fairs for several years before the pivotal moment that would transform their hobby into a full-time career.
The turning point came when Roxie went searching for book-themed candles and discovered none existed. Drawing on skills she’d acquired making handmade scented candles with her mom as a teenager, Roxie created a library-scented bookish candle - a cozy sandalwood scent with notes of leather and oak called “Oxford Library.” And just like that, the genre of book-scented candles was born.
After two successful Kickstarter campaigns for startup funding, Buzzfeed featured Frostbeard’s “Old Books” candle in a 2013 holiday gift guide. Business grew rapidly, allowing Roxie and Tom to move out of their home studio in 2014, hire their first employee, and establish a studio space in the Arts District of Northeast Minneapolis. Today, they operate from their studio at 3506 Chicago Ave, where all production and shipping takes place.
Frostbeard Studio operates with a strong commitment to quality and sustainability. All candles are made with 100% soy wax, lead-free cotton wicks, and hand-selected fragrance oils. They’re vegan, cruelty-free, and easy to repurpose or recycle. The company also partners with a service to make all deliveries carbon neutral by measuring their carbon footprint and purchasing credits toward long-term carbon removal solutions.
