FairyLoot
Exclusive-edition fantasy hardbacks with sprayed edges and six genre lines, carrying the best customer record of any book box we cover.
London book-box company founded in 2016, now a fantasy publisher in its own right, shipping exclusive editions worldwide from six genre lines.
FairyLoot was founded in 2016 by Anissa de Gomery and Michael Sammer, who packed the first box by hand in a London flat. The first featured title was Jessica Khoury’s The Forbidden Wish. The company now employs more than 35 people and ships over 10,000 books a month.
What began as a single young adult box has become six separate subscription lines, a members-only store, and a publishing imprint.
The editions are the product. Every book is a redesigned hardback made for FairyLoot rather than a retail copy: custom dust jackets, sprayed or stencilled edges, foiled cases, endpaper art and, frequently, a signed bookplate or an author letter. These are not available in shops, which is why the secondary market for them is so active.
In January 2025 the company launched Wayward TxF, a publishing imprint run with Transworld. Its debut, Sable Sorenson’s Dire Bound, went straight onto the Sunday Times bestseller list in August 2025. Very few subscription companies in any category have moved upstream into producing the thing they curate.
FairyLoot runs a separate US storefront at us.fairyloot.com, priced in dollars, which ships only to the United States and Canada. The company states that deliveries to US and UK addresses carry no customs or tax charges on arrival. It does not publish where US parcels are dispatched from, and shipping is quoted at checkout rather than on any published rate card.
Company accounts filed for the year ended 31 March 2024 show a yearly profit of £2,650,778, against a tenfold increase in sales between 2020 and 2024.
