Deadbolt Mystery Society was founded in February 2018 by brothers Jason and Shawn Brannon, who had opened Deadbolt Escape Rooms in Tupelo, Mississippi two years earlier. The subscription grew out of that: the same puzzle design, packed into a box you can solve at a kitchen table.
Each month brings a self-contained murder mystery rather than an episode of a serial, which is unusual in this category and means there is no season to commit to.
Most mystery subscriptions sell a serial that only pays off if you buy every episode. Deadbolt sells a complete game each month, so a single box is a finished experience and a lapsed subscription leaves no unfinished story.
The company has a genuinely strong customer record, with a Trustpilot score of 4.7 across more than 650 reviews, and The New York Times included it in a roundup of favourite mystery box subscriptions in October 2025.
The site does not disclose a registered legal entity name, a mailing address, or a phone number anywhere we could find, and there is no Better Business Bureau profile.
